How to Set Up NotebookLM: A Guide for Filipino Students

Everyone’s busy fighting over ChatGPT credits while there’s a free Google AI tool sitting right there — and it’s arguably better for studying.

It’s called NotebookLM, and most Filipino students still don’t know it exists. If you’ve been looking for a way to use NotebookLM for students in the Philippines, this guide has everything you need — what it does, how to set it up, and 5 ways to actually use it tonight.

This thing turns your modules, lecture slides, and PDF reviewers into your own personal AI tutor. You can ask it questions about your notes, get summaries of your sources, and even generate podcast-style audio reviews you can listen to on the LRT. Sayang if you don’t try it.

What Is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google’s AI research and study assistant. Think of it as ChatGPT, but with one massive difference: it only answers based on the sources YOU upload.

Upload your Bio module? It only talks about that module. Upload 10 thesis references? It only pulls from those papers. No hallucinated facts from the internet. No random Wikipedia answers.

That’s why it’s grabe useful for studying. You’re not asking AI to make stuff up — you’re asking it to help you understand the actual material your teacher gave you.

It’s powered by Google’s Gemini AI, and the free version is solid: up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook, and 3 Audio Overviews per day. More than enough for school.

How to Set Up NotebookLM: A Guide for Filipino Students

This part takes 2 minutes. Promise.

  1. Go to notebooklm.google.com on any browser, OR download the NotebookLM app — Google released a mobile app for both Android and iOS.
  2. Sign in with your Gmail (the same one you use for Google Classroom).
  3. Tap “Create new notebook.”
  4. Upload your sources — PDFs, Google Docs, YouTube links, even copy-pasted text. NotebookLM supports PDFs, .docx files, Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, websites, YouTube videos, and audio files.
  5. That’s it. Start asking questions in the chat.

No credit card. No subscription. No “free trial” trap. Just sign in and go.

💡 Kuya tip: Make a separate notebook for each subject. One for Bio, one for History, one for your thesis. Mas organized. Mas mabilis maghanap later.

5 Ways Filipino Students Can Use NotebookLM

Here’s where the magic happens. Try at least one of these tonight.

1. Upload Your Modules → Instant Quiz Generator

This is the cheat code for exam week.

Upload your module PDFs (or screenshot your printed handouts and convert them to PDF). Then ask NotebookLM:

“Based on these sources, create a 20-question quiz mixing multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. Don’t show the answers yet — I’ll send my answers first, then you grade me.”

Boom. Custom quiz from YOUR teacher’s actual materials. Not generic internet content. Not hallucinated questions. The exact stuff that’s on your test.

Works for any subject — STEM, ABM, HUMSS, GAS, college courses. Whatever module your prof gave you, NotebookLM can quiz you on it.

2. Audio Overview for LRT/Jeep Commute Studying

This is the killer feature nobody talks about.

NotebookLM can generate a podcast-style audio discussion of your sources. Two AI hosts literally have a conversation explaining your study material — like a Spotify podcast made just for your notes.

Upload your reviewer. Click “Generate Audio Overview.” Wait a few minutes. Download or stream it on your phone.

Now you can review while:

  • Stuck in EDSA traffic
  • On the LRT/MRT to school
  • Walking to your next class
  • In line at the registrar

That dead time you’d normally spend scrolling? Sulit na sulit now. The free tier gives you 3 Audio Overviews per day — plenty for daily reviewers.

💡 Kuya tip: Generate one Audio Overview per subject the night before an exam. Fall asleep listening to your own reviewer. Productive pa yung tulog mo.

3. Upload Thesis Sources → AI Research Assistant

Thesis season hits different. Especially when your panel asks: “Where did you get that claim?”

Upload your 15–30 research papers into a single NotebookLM notebook. Then ask:

“Which of these sources discuss the impact of social media on Filipino youth mental health? Quote the exact lines and tell me which paper they’re from.”

NotebookLM will give you the actual citations from YOUR uploaded papers — with page references. No making things up. No fake authors. (We’ve all heard the horror stories of students using ChatGPT and getting caught with hallucinated citations. Hindi mangyayari yan dito.)

You can also ask it to find conflicting findings, common methodologies, or research gaps across your sources. Game-changer for RRL writing.

💡 Ate tip: Create one notebook per chapter of your thesis. Upload only the sources relevant to that chapter. Mas focused ang answers, less noise.

4. Build a Board Exam Reviewer From Your Own Notes

For LET, NLE, board exams, CPA, bar — anyone reviewing for a major exam:

Upload all your reviewers, past notes, and study materials into one notebook. Then use NotebookLM to:

  • Generate a study guide — it auto-organizes key concepts from your sources
  • Create a briefing doc — like a cheat sheet of the most important points
  • Quiz you daily on different topics
  • Make a timeline for historical or chronological subjects
  • Generate Audio Overviews for each topic — perfect for daily commute review

Instead of jumping between 5 different reviewer books, everything’s in one place. And NotebookLM ties it all together.

💡 Kuya tip: Set one notebook per subject area (e.g., Professional Education, General Education, Content). Upload everything related to that area. Then quiz yourself daily using different prompt types.

5. Summarize Long PDFs Instantly

You know that 80-page reading your prof assigned that you definitely won’t finish before class tomorrow?

Upload it. Ask:

“Summarize this in 10 bullet points, then list the 5 most important concepts I should remember for a discussion.”

Or:

“Pretend I’m in class and the teacher just asked me to explain Chapter 3 in 2 minutes. What should I say?”

You’ll get a clean, focused summary based on the actual document. Then if anything’s unclear, ask follow-ups: “Explain point #3 in simpler terms” or “Give me a real-world Filipino example of this.”

💡 Ate tip: This is for understanding, not for skipping. Read the source after the summary, not instead of it. If your prof asks a follow-up question in class, you’ll want to have actually read it.

Limitations to Know About

NotebookLM is amazing, but it’s not perfect. Heads up on these:

Daily caps on Audio Overviews. The free tier limits you to 3 per day. If you need more, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

No offline mode. You need an active internet connection for everything — no airplane-mode studying.

Copy-protected PDFs won’t upload. Some textbook PDFs are locked. Workaround: take screenshots, convert to a fresh PDF, then upload.

It only knows your sources. That’s the strength AND the limit. If you didn’t upload it, NotebookLM doesn’t know it. Upload comprehensive materials.

Don’t upload anything sensitive. Your data goes through Google’s servers. Don’t upload IDs, personal documents, or private records.

Your Move

If you’re studying for anything right now — exams, thesis, board exams, UPCAT, finals — give NotebookLM 30 minutes tonight. Upload one set of materials. Generate one Audio Overview. Try one quiz.

You’ll wonder why nobody told you about this sooner.

It’s free. It’s mobile. It’s powered by the same AI that runs Gemini. And it works specifically with YOUR study materials. Wala nang dahilan para hindi mag-aral.

Game ka na? Try it this week and let us know in the comments how it went. Tara, level up tayo together. 🚀
